Later, Greenwood was founded there.

In 1895, Robert Wood established a log store in the area and gave the city its name.

Infrastructure development

In 1896, the city acquired three hotels, a general store, a livery stable, two assay offices, an opera house and other establishments.

As of 1897, Greenwood had the status of an incorporated city.

In 1899, the local population was 3,000 people. However, that same year, a major fire broke out in the city, which led to the destruction of several enterprises.

Metallurgy

The BC Copper Company metallurgical plant started to operate in the area in 1901. It received ore from the Mother Lode Mine and surrounding ones.

In addition, Greenwood supplied nearby camps, including Deadwood, Wellington, etc.

Later, the city built a business district with many companies.

In 1906, Greenwood acquired The Times and Greenwood Ledge newspapers.

Difficult period

In 1910, the city’s population decreased to 1,5000 people. When the First World War ended, copper ceased to be so popular and in 1918, the copper market completely died out.

In addition, severe downtime was observed in the smelter industry, which led to the closure of all the smelters in the Greenwood area. It was the beginning of a decline period in the city’s history.
