Dr. Mark Suyama took over the Robson Dental Clinic in 1989, moved it to Vancouver Centre Mall in 1996 and into the Telus Garden building in 2016, where it now trades as Vancouver City Centre Dental. What travelled with it is a stance: longevity over cosmetic appeal, tried-and-true methods ahead of the newest fad, and no cosmetic work a patient does not need. Second opinions are offered, not resented.

Treatments

Prevention carries the practice: hygiene examinations for inflammation, bleeding and calculus, scaling, polishing and coaching on the home routine. Restorative work runs to tooth-coloured fillings, porcelain crowns, bridges, inlays and onlays, dentures and full-mouth reconstruction. Wisdom teeth are tracked on X-ray and taken out before the roots finish forming. Whitening, bonding and veneers cover the cosmetic side; teeth are straightened with Invisalign aligners or fixed braces. Sportsguards are made to measure, and urgent cases are taken.

Screening, scanning and sedation

A check-up can include a VELscope oral cancer screening: a handheld blue light developed with the British Columbia Cancer Agency and MD Anderson, under which healthy tissue glows green and suspect tissue reads dark. Impressions are taken with an iTero wand instead — no putty, no radiation. Nervous patients are offered oral sedation or nitrous oxide, and because nitrous clears quickly they drive themselves afterwards.

The dentists

Dr. Mark Suyama, University of Toronto 1989, spent over sixteen years assisting in operating rooms at BC Children’s Hospital and Vancouver General Hospital, cleft palate surgery among them. Dr. Tiffany Chen grew up in Vancouver, took her DDS at Shanghai Jiao Tong University and holds Gold Plus Invisalign provider standing. Dr. Jolene Hsieh trained at Taipei Medical University with two years of hospital residency and is drawn to anxious patients. Dr. Garry Singh held clinical and administrative posts before his Canadian certification. Six hygienists and four certified assistants stand behind them.
