Her first steps and efforts at the beginning of her composer career were very hard and upsetting. She had the desire and ability to write compositions, but, unfortunately, nobody was interested in her works at all. Still, she didn’t despair and continued to strive for her dream. One day, a meeting drastically changed her life.

Alexina Louie is a famous Canadian classical composer, pianist and music teacher.

The woman was born in Vancouver, but her musical career began in the United States. In 1980, she returned to her native Canada and wrote more than 80 classical works.

One of her most famous works is the opera The Scarlet Princess.

In 1990, 1992 and 2003, Alexina was recognized as the most frequently performed classical composer. She is also the winner of numerous prestigious awards, both national and international.

Beginning of the story

Alexina Louie began playing the piano when she was only seven years old.

The girl studied music at the University of British Columbia. At that time, Alexina earned money by playing the piano in Vancouver hotels.

When the university awarded her a scholarship, she began studying composition.

In addition, she studied Asian culture and Chinese traditions.

At that time, the future composer became a member of the Women’s Ensemble group, which introduced meditation practices based on movements and music.

Success

Later, Alexina proved herself to be a talented teacher of music theory and electronic music. She also began her career as a composer.

However, all of her efforts were unfruitful. It continued until her early works fell into the hands of a producer from the Vancouver branch of the CBC.

He began recommending Alexina Louie to his colleagues who would commission her new compositions. This was how Refuge appeared. It became incredibly successful and made Alexina famous.

Combination of activities

In addition to creating musical works, Alexina taught music theory and composition at the Canadian Royal Conservatory of Music.

In 1983, she was offered and agreed to become the conductor of one of the new Canadian orchestras.

From 1996 to 2002, Alexina officially cooperated with the Canadian Opera and was its composer-in-residence. During that period, she created a full-scale opera The Scarlet Princess and comic mini-operas Burnt Toast.
