Beginning of the story
The history of Tranquillе Sanatorium began in 1907. It was intended to help people with tuberculosis. At that time, this disease was called the White Plague.
There used to be a ranch on the site of the future sanatorium. The provincial government decided to purchase this land to build a health resort. When tuberculosis began to spread in British Columbia in the 1900s, the construction of a small community known as Tranquillе began too.
Infrastructure
Initially, this institution was called the King Edward VII Sanatorium and was treating tuberculosis.
The community around the sanatorium included gardens, houses, a gym, a farm, a fire station, an assembly hall, a cafeteria, a laundry, tennis courts, a steam plant, a school and all the necessary infrastructure.
Closure
The sanatorium was closed in 1958 and in 1959, people with mental illnesses began to be treated there.
The final closure of the institution took place in 1983. However, it was used to keep young offenders until the 1990s.
New owner
In September 1991, the land and the sanatorium were purchased by the Italian Giovanni Camporese. He wanted to demolish the building and establish a full-fledged resort there. However, the plans weren’t released, because the government intervened and prevented this in 1997. Instead, a medical laboratory was opened in the building.
Further development
Later, the abandoned site was transferred to Tranquille Farm Fresh and the fertile land began to be used for agricultural purposes.
On weekends, the site began to hold excursions and theatrical performances. Later, this territory was allocated for the Tranquille On The Lake resort community.
Thus, Tranquille Sanatorium went down in history as one of the best health resorts in British Columbia, which guaranteed people effective treatment for tuberculosis.
